Enabling a Culture of Cloud Cost Transparency - Vik Saluja (Cigna)
Cloud cost management is very complex starting with the variable component of pay per use of resources. Typical challenges include charges at Centralized Organization/IT level for services, support, network, taxes, discounts, etc.  that needs to be first made visible to the consumers via showback and eventually be charged back appropriately to provide full cost transparency.

Showback and Chargeback both require cost allocation which enables everyone to be accountable
for their cloud costs, identify opportunities for optimization, and reduce the variable component of cloud spend.

Revisiting the false-decision trap; Finops at scale and the union of internal and external tooling - James Jackson & Patrick Raymond (Ternary)
As companies progress through their FinOps journeys the need for visibility, rate and resource optimization and collaboration typically outgrow traditional platforms and internal tooling.

The answer to the FinOps problem lies somewhere at the junction of these solutions and offers trade offs between time consuming builds, maintenance costs and core competencies of the business.

By leveraging robust APIs and powerful configuration options within a platform’s UI organizations can create the ideal mix of normalized data from multiple clouds, analytics and reporting combined with internal metrics to produce actionable outcomes for the business.

You still need a budget, but you don’t need to use dollars - Matt Tomlinson (Indeed)
Many of us are engineers, have an engineering/technical background, or work with engineers regularly. A common attribute we have all seen is the fixation on optimizing a single number/metric. At Indeed, we set Time > Cost as a priority, so we are moving away from dollar-based budgeting to incentivize velocity. This has turned out to be incredibly useful in shifting the conversation away from the price of cloud resources (a huge variable) to the number of resources needed. Sounds easy in practice, but there are some items you need to consider and be aware of before you start.

Automating Cloud Cost Governance via Code, Lindbergh Matillano (Avalara) & Kapil Thangavelu (Stacklet.io)
As cloud adoption scales within organizations, they struggle to enforce policies that control usage and optimize spending in the cloud, especially across development teams, tools, and platforms.
Cloud cost governance as code provides a way for FinOps teams to automatically and dynamically apply policies, including cost optimization, in fast-changing cloud environments. Code associated with cost policies is created, deployed, and maintained in the same way developers manage application or infrastructure code. Developers can easily understand these policies and don’t have to worry about tracking or managing costs. As violations occur, automated notifications and workflows can be triggered.
Join us in this talk to learn how FinOps can use governance as code to automate and enforce cost policies. We will also use Cloud Custodian, a Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) open source project, to demonstrate the concept in practice.

Unlocking Cloud Cost Aware Culture in the Enterprise - Venkatesh Perumal (CoreStack)
Public cloud continues to be a large driver of IT spend. Today, clouds have in-built design principles that ensure high performance and security. However, cost becomes the focus only when it breaches control or business faces unforeseen conditions. Hence, Cloud Cost Aware Culture must be intrinsic in cloud adoption to implement pro-active cost governance. Every workload lifecycle should follow inform, optimize, and operate phases defined by the FinOps organization. Example
  • Implement cost prediction before the deployment process
  • Implement methods to allocate and track costs (budget and tagging)
  • Automate tracking, allocation, and cost optimization

Chalk Talk : Data Efficiency led by Jason Nadeau (Project N)
Storing petabytes of data in the cloud costs a lot of money. At nearly $300k per PB per year, those costs can quickly become unsustainable and force uncomfortable trade-offs and decisions. After all, we rarely want to get rid of data since more of it typically means better analytics, higher quality data products, and more value generated for the organization. Fortunately, most cloud object data also has significant latent inefficiency that, once removed or at least minimized, makes that data much more economical to store, access and transmit.
In this Chalk Talk we’ll collectively dive into the problem and sources of data inefficiency at cloud scale and explore various approaches to make data more efficient and thus lower costs. Bring your own hard-won lessons, experiences and solutions to the table - it’s going to be a lively and fun discussion! We also have a new playbook for managing data efficiency in the FinOps framework.

FinOps can often suffer from “too many cooks in the kitchen", bogged down by conflicting stakeholder agendas and opinions. Despite the divisions that created from these varied views, FinOps teams can empower their stakeholders and banish the bureaucracy by providing cross-functional access to trusted, quality data. This is the connective tissue and required culture for any leading FinOps practice. In this session, Jay Litkey, Head of Cloud Center of Excellence and FinOps teams, will present real world case studies of how to leverage data from a proliferating number of sources (e.g. cloud bills, CSP tooling, DevOps pipelines, application telemetry, ITAM systems, etc) to align a diverse set of stakeholders and maximize the business value of cloud.
