Storing petabytes of data in the cloud costs a lot of money. At nearly $300k per PB per year, those costs can quickly become unsustainable and force uncomfortable trade-offs and decisions. After all, we rarely want to get rid of data since more of it typically means better analytics, higher quality data products, and more value generated for the organization. Fortunately, most cloud object data also has significant latent inefficiency that, once removed or at least minimized, makes that data much more economical to store, access and transmit.
In this Chalk Talk we’ll collectively dive into the problem and sources of data inefficiency at cloud scale and explore various approaches to make data more efficient and thus lower costs. Bring your own hard-won lessons, experiences and solutions to the table - it’s going to be a lively and fun discussion! We also have a new playbook for managing data efficiency in the FinOps framework.
